During this travel slowdown I’m updating older posts using the Keyword Golden Ratio methodology

This travel crunch has many travel bloggers hurting for traffic. However, instead of letting that get me down I am focusing on updating older posts using the Keyword Golden Ratio (KGR) methodology. Here are the highlights of this technique I’ve only recently learned about from the NicheSiteProject:

  1. Find an older post you are ranking for already (doesn’t have to be first page)
  2. Using your primary search term use a tool like KeySearch or Ahrefs and find related keywords
  3. Filter those related keywords down based on search volumes below 250/mo
  4. Then take that filtered list of keywords and conduct allintitle searches on them. This will tell you how many keywords are actually used in any published posts for that keyword
  5. Take that result and do some math! Divide the monthly search volume for the keyword by the number of allintitle results. If the number is less than .25 you have found a Golden Keyword according to the Niche Site Project, which means you should be able to rank for it fairly quickly!
  6. Update your post to include that new keyword (you probably only need one or two mentions)
  7. Resubmit your post to Google Search for re-indexing

Let’s use an example. Take my 2nd blog, Best Travel Drone where I am helping folks find a perfect drone for traveling. Let’s go through it:

  1. My main search term for this page is Best Travel Drones
  2. Using Keysearch I find related terms including “Best Drone for Travel Bloggers” (search vol of 20/mo) and best drone for vacation” (search vol 70/mo)
  3. Using allintitle search I discover there are 16 posts with “Best Drone for Travel Bloggers” in the title.
  4. Using my formula I divide 20/16 = .8. Not a good KGR ratio. Or in other words for it’s low search volume it has a HIGH amount of entries
  5. Using my other keyword, “best drone for vacation” I discover there are 17 posts competing for this keyword
  6. Again, using my formula I divide 70/17 = .24. Bingo! I’ve found a potential Golden Keyword

I update my post to include an H2 reference to this word and maybe one other mention and resubmit to Google Search. I should start to rank for this keyword shortly. You might say…wait a minute, 70/mo is too small. Sure, but if you can find 5 or 6 golden keywords you can quickly make some decent sized traffic up which, in my case, could monetize with Amazon conversions.

I can’t take any credit for this methodology and only recently discovered it on the DNW Blogging like you Mean it Facebook Group. The originator of this theory is the Niche Site Project. Worth a read.

Good luck out there!
